Adding Variables to Body and Subject line

View a walk-through of using Variable Content in the emfluence ClickLearn section here.

Adding personalization to your message using variable data helps you catch your subscriber’s attention and drive response rates. You can include any data that exists on your contact records.

For example, you could add the recipient’s first name to the greeting, include a customer id number, pull in the last product the customer purchased ($$Custom01) and more.  When using variable data, it’s important that all of your contacts who will receive the email have data in that variable field.  Otherwise the personalization will show up blank when the email goes out. To update blank information from within the Platform, see the video tutorial on the Bulk Update tool.

To get started, insert the cursor or highlight the text where you would like the custom variable to appear. Next, click on the variable icon in the editor.

The icon is the same in both the Standard CKEditor and the new Drag & Drop editor.

In the pop-up you can choose which variable type to insert. To use data from the contact's record choose Contact Data (for standard fields such as First Name) or Cutsom Fields for any custom field data (such as Custom 1). Select your variable from the options and it will insert that variable into your content.

On the next screen, you will have the option to add a Fallback Value. This will be used for any recipient on this email who has a blank value for that field.

You can also add variables to the Subject Line of your Message. Click the same {x} button to the right of any of the input fields to place a variable in that field.

To preview your variables, save your email and click Next. From the Preview Step, you can enter an email address to preview how the variable data will look in your email.

When this message is sent, the recipient’s first name will appear in the greeting.  Variable data is only as good as the data you have, so be sure you keep clean records and update any blank fields by using the Bulk Update tool or use a Fallback where you don't have data for your full recipient list.
